New Alternative for Treating Obesity

New Alternative for Treating Obesity

America is overweight.  Estimates show that 1 in 3 adults suffer from the serious chronic disease of obesity.  This disease has a significantly negative impact on many different body systems and people who are obese have a much greater risk of developing even more serious conditions such as heart disease, bone and joint disease, and Type 2 diabetes.

The cause of gaining weight is pretty simple:  if one consumes more calories than they burn as energy during physical activity, they gain weight.  This may seem like the reason that so many people are obese, but there are many other risk factors that contribute to obesity: Continue reading New Alternative for Treating Obesity

Developments in Alzheimer’s Research

Deadly Disease

The brain is the most complex organ in the body, and its intricate functions are far from understood.  Because it is such a complicated part of the body, brain disorders like Alzheimer’s are very difficult to treat.

Alzheimer’s is a debilitating disease that causes a gradual loss of brain function as the neural connections are destroyed.  These connections, or synapses, are what allow the brain to work and are used especially in the formation of memories and learning.

The destruction of these synapses results in memory loss, behavioral changes, cognition impairment, and eventually death.  There have been decades devoted to Alzheimer’s research and even the best treatments discovered are unable to stop or reverse the progression of this debilitating disease.

However, all of that may change shortly due to two groundbreaking developments that have recently come about.

The brain’s immune system is made up of a cell called microglia that specializes in cleaning the brain of bacteria, damaged cells, and plaques.  As a person ages, a protein receptor called EP2 builds up in the brain and gets in the way of the microglia doing their job, allowing bacteria and harmful agents to build up which in turn causes the nerve cells to die.

In a recent study, the EP2 receptor was blocked in the brains of mice with Alzheimer’s, and this resulted in the mice showing improved brain functions and recovering lost memories.  Continue reading Developments in Alzheimer’s Research

The Doctor Is In: House Calls On Wheels!

Mobile Medical Clinics

Watch any old movie or television show and you’ll come across doctors caring for their patients in the comfort of his or her home.  In this day and age, going to see the doctor is a day-long affair, with more time spent in the waiting room than actually meeting with the doctor.

While the idea of a doctor making a house call seems to be a thing of the past, thanks to the physicians at GoDocs http://godocsmed.com, an in-home visit from your doctor is still very much a thing of the present.  This is such a breath of fresh air about the way we have come to know the medical field in the past few decades.  Not only is a house call significantly more convenient, but it is also much more personal and effective.

In the past, physician house calls made up the majority of doctor-patient encounters but over time, became almost non-existent.  There are several reasons that in-home visits by physicians dropped off: Continue reading The Doctor Is In: House Calls On Wheels!

Searching For A Cure

A Cure For Diabetes

Diabetes is the nation’s 7th leading cause of death and is known to have severe effects on the body such as blindness, kidney disease, heart attacks, and limb amputation.

When you eat food, it breaks down into sugar that is absorbed into the blood.  When you exercise, your body uses the stored sugar to help energize it and push your muscles and organs to work.  Your body needs insulin, a hormone that aids in breaking down the sugar in your blood, and glucagon which is a hormone that raises the concentration of sugar in the bloodstream.

In a normal body, the pancreas automatically produces both of these hormones to keep blood sugar levels in a particular range.  In a diabetic, the body produces very little, if any, of these hormones, and is unable to keep the blood glucose levels in range.  Both high blood sugar and low blood sugar are very dangerous, and can be deadly, if not treated.  Continue reading Searching For A Cure

Modern Technology To Treat Migraine Headaches

Treating Migraine Headaches

According to the Migraine Research Foundation, migraine headaches are the third most widespread ailment in the world.  Almost 12% of the population suffers from migraines and are most common between the ages of 25 and 55, although 10% of American children are affected by them as well.

If you’ve ever experienced a migraine, you know how debilitating and serious they can be.   While most people who are affected by migraines experience them once or twice a month, there are millions of people who suffer from chronic daily migraines.

A migraine is not just a bad headache.  It is a crippling condition of neurological symptoms that include severe throbbing pain, nausea, vomiting, visual impairment, dizziness, sensory sensitivity, and numbness in the face or extremities, and can last anywhere from 4 hours to 4 days.

Because this chronic condition incapacitates the person affected, it can significantly impact their quality of life, which often results in other medical issues such as depression, sleep problems, and anxiety.  Continue reading Modern Technology To Treat Migraine Headaches

Be Your Advocate

You Are Your Own Healthcare Advocate

In this day and age, it is more important than ever to be an advocate for your personal health and medical treatments.  Pharmaceutical companies have corrupted the medical field by pressuring or bribing doctors to prescribe their drugs even when they are not effective or beneficial to the patients, publishing inaccurate drug trial results, and producing various drugs that are harmful to people instead of beneficial.

Doctors are backed into a corner because the health insurance industry is paying them a lot less money to cover services, and they often find the only way their practice can survive is by taking the money offered by the pharmaceutical companies.

There are so many different sources for medical news and advice, and it is very difficult to determine what is real and what is made up by companies just trying to make more and more money.

It is a scary time because your doctor, whom you entrust your health and well-being to, may be working with one of these big drug companies and may prescribe you medicine that you might not need, or that causes harmful side effects which in turn require more drugs to cure.  Continue reading Be Your Advocate
